Charity Miles: the perfect Pokémon Go companion

We’re still addicted to Pokémon Go around here, because we’re geeks like that. One of Pat’s clever fans (seriously, you guys, you’re embarrassingly smart) sent him a heads up about an app that basically lets you walk for your favorite charity. It’s called Charity Miles (available in the App Storeand Google Play).

Looks like this in Androidland.

Here’s how it works–Charity Miles lets you track your activity, even if you’re just walking around the office, playing Pokémon Go, or pacing nervously while you wait for your Destroyinator to arrive in the mail. The more you log on a walk, the more you earn for your favorite charity. That’s it.

So of course, we created the Worldbuilders team (that’s with the capital W), and you can sign up for as many teams as you like. Right now, we’re the new kid, so Worldbuilders doesn’t show up in the charity list, just the team list. But here’s where the magic kicks in: if you guys join the Worldbuilders team, Charity Miles will notice. The more folks we get walking for the Worldbuilders team, the quicker we get added to the list of charities folks can walk for. This is literal team building!

Rachel took a few screenshots to show the setup process in action. Create a profile and sign in to Charity Miles. Then choose your teams!

Here’s the menu, where you can search for Teams to join.

Priorities: Rachel’s already on Team Mystic, but she can also join Worldbuilders!

Choose your team, get this screen, and click Join Team (stock photo lady might join later).

Before each walk, open the app, choose your charity from the list (we’re not on the list yet, but there are plenty of awesome charites to choose from), select your activity type, and as long as the app is running, your miles will go toward their cause. When you’re done, end your activity through the app and it will tell you how you did!

Now, go out and catch some Pokémon! *Ahem* we mean, go out and walk!
