If you want a little tough love to whip your writing into shape, RJ Barker is ready to help. While he won’t tear you down and salt your wounds, he promises to be straightforward and honest. RJ says:
A critique, two chapters or up to 5k words. I’m always at pains to point out that I’m a writer, not an editor. So all I can do is tell you what I would do with something, and why something works or doesn’t for me. As it’s a critique it’s not about making you feel good about your writing, it’s about giving you things to think about, and I always think one of the most useful skills for a writer is the ability to sort out what is helpful and what can be ignored in other people’s opinions.
I’m not going to help you with grammar, cos my editor would die laughing if I said I was, but ideas and character, and world? I’m good at that stuff. If you’re looking for someone to make you feel good about your writing, maybe I’m not for you, but if you want a push to make you think harder about your writing, maybe I can help. I do sugar the pill, it’s not all forcing castor oil down your neck. But I thought you should know what to expect.
RJ Barker is the multi-award shortlisted (Kitschie, Gemmel, British Fantasy Society Best Newcomer & BEST Novelist) author of THE WOUNDED KINGDOM TRILOGY and the author of THE BONE SHIPS (“Brilliant writing” – Robin Hobb.) He lives in the north of England with his family, an angry cat, a collection of odd taxidermy and some very noisy music. He likes writing, outsiders, art and people. Which is a good job, as he is at least three of those things.
