Geeks Doing Good

how it  works

We raise money for charities we believe do the best work in their field: Heifer International, Mercy Corps, and First Book. These charities' missions and values are exactly what we have in mind when we think, "Where can this money do the most good?"

Heifer plays the long game, bringing education, materials, and a passing-the-gift philosophy that ensures generations of self-sufficiency down the road. Mercy Corps jumps into action as crisises arise, bringing food, clothing, shelter, and education to people caught in dire situations like natural disasters and war. First Book promotes literacy around the world by providing books for educators and administrators, bringing much-needed educational materials to disadvantaged youth.

These three charities make sure the money we raise gets to where it's needed most, and where it will do some real, long-term good.

Our Partners

It's not just our favorite charities, we also work with con organizers, writers' groups, and other friends who support us by getting the word out and staging their own fundraisers to help contribute to our cause.

We've worked with the GenCon Writers' Symposium, who held a couple events to raise money for Worldbuilders. We got together with NerdCon: Stories to stage a couple cool activities. We helped Cards Against Humanity get their Fantasy Expansion together, and in turn they made sure Worldbuilders ended up with most of the proceeds from the sale of that pack.

We started out with one annual fundraiser, and these days, we find ourselves surrounded by like-minded friends and allies who get creative, get involved, and get some serious results. You guys rock!

Mid-Season Fundraiser

Geeks Doing Good

Every June, we hold a fundraiser via IndieGoGo where we debut new and exclusive products. Money raised during the mid-season fundraiser goes to our favorite charities (like Heifer International and Mercy Corps), with a little coming to Worldbuilders for our operational expenses, like shipping perks and prizes. It's also a fun way to announce the cool new stuff, which is either exclusive to the IndieGoGo, or something that we'll be featuring later in our online store, The Tinker's Packs, but let you get your hands on them a little early.

The mid-season fundraiser is different from our annual fundraiser (below) in that we focus on specific products. There's no chance involved--if you want something, buy it, and your money supports a great cause. Speaking of buying things for a good cause...

The Tinker's Packs Online Store

The Tinker's Packs Logo

Everything you buy in our online store helps support Worldbuilders. We use the income from our store to help cover the operating expenses for Worldbuilders itself, which is what lets us give every penny we raise during our active fundraisers to Heifer, Mercy Corps, and First Book. Once we've covered our operating costs, everything else goes into our general donation fund for our favorite charities. When you buy tee shirts, games, and other collectibles in our store, you're helping keep us in business so we can do what we do best: Give.

Annual Fundraiser

This is where it all started, with a goofy idea that people will always help each other, and that handing out cool prizes never hurt anyone.

Heifer International is the charity that spurred us into action back when this all started, and they're still the benefactor of most of our fundraising. It helps people raise themselves up out of poverty and starvation. Heifer promotes education, sustainable agriculture, and local industry all over the world.

They don’t just keep kids from starving, they make it so families can take care of themselves. They give goats, sheep, and chickens to families so their children have milk to drink, warm clothes to wear, and eggs to eat.

(Are you ready? I’m so ready. Let’s do it.)

Since it's such a huge event, you’ve got a couple different options for donating in our annual fundraiser.

The Lottery

The Sure Thing (AKA The Tinker's Packs)

The Auctions

So what's the best fundraiser?

That's for you to decide! Each one of our fundraisers is tailored to a slightly different audience. Sometimes we'll run a straight fundraiser, where we put the call out for donations with no prizes, acts of whimsy, or products. We're just collecting money for a cause. We did this during our 2015 fundraiser for Mercy Corps to help them raise money for Syrian refugees, and you guys stepped up big time. Sometimes we'll run an IndieGoGo campaign where you can buy cool stuff and support charities. And once a year, it's time for our flagship fundraiser with all the auctions, prizes, and shenanigans.

In our introduction video and fundraiser writeup, we'll always tell you who we're supporting and what we're up to, and we'll always let you know how you can help. Please read the instructions/directions carefully before they participate in our different fundraisers so you know exactly what's going on.

We know you’re excited. We’re all going to raise some money, make the world a better place, and end up with big warm fuzzy feelings.

Let’s do this thing.

Pat & the Worldbuilders Team

P.S. Below are this year’s lovely sponsors. They have donated, books, services, and cold hard cash to make Worldbuilders what it is today.

You should show them some love. They deserve it.
